The Role of Preview and Incremental Delivery on Visual Search
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent studies show that visual search often involves a combination of both parallel and serial search strategies. Consequently, computational models and theoretical accounts of visual search processing have evolved from traditional parallel or serial descriptions to a continuum from “efficient” to “inefficient.” In our first experiments (1a & 1b), we demonstrate with various conditions that search efficiency does not increase with simultaneous delivery of target features in a conjunction-search task. In the second experiment, we explore effects of incremental non-linguistic information delivery and discover improvement of search efficiency. We find a facilitatory effect when non-linguistic visual delivery of target features is concurrent with the visual display onset, but not when the target features are delivered prior to display onset. The results support an interactive account of visual perception that explains linguistic and nonlinguistic mediation of visual search as chiefly due to the incrementality of target feature delivery once search has begun.

Two forms of scene memory guide visual search: Memory for scene context and memory for the binding of target object to scene location
The role of scene memory in visual search was investigated in a preview-search task. Participants saw a preview of a real-world scene prior to searching through that scene for a target object. Compared with a no preview baseline, search was facilitated following a preview scene that did not contain the ultimate target object, indicating that memory for the general context and layout of a scene ...

Previewing distracters enhances the efficiency of visual search. Watson and Humphreys (1997) proposed that the preview benefit rests on visual marking, a mechanism which actively encodes distracter locations at preview and inhibits them afterwards at search. As Watson and Humphreys did, we used a letter-color search task to study constraints of visual marking in conjunction search and near-effi...
متن کاملCognitive control of fixation duration in visual search: The role of extrafoveal processing
Participants’ eye movements were monitored in two visual search experiments that manipulated target-distractor similarity (high vs. low) as well as the availability of distractors for extrafoveal processing (Free-Viewing vs. No-Preview). The influence of the target-distractor similarity by preview manipulation on the distributions of first fixation and second fixation duration was examined by u...
متن کاملTop-up search and the attentional blink: A two-stage account of the preview effect in search
An inefficient visual search task can be facilitated if half the distractor items are presented as a preview prior to the presentation of the remaining distractor items and target. This benefit in search is termed the preview effect . Recent research has found that a preview effect can still occur if the previewed items disappear before reappearing again just before the search items (the ‘‘top-...
متن کاملPrioritization by transients in visual search.
There is an ongoing debate as to whether prioritizing new objects over old objects (the so-called preview benefit) is the result of top-down inhibition of old objects (i.e., visual marking; Watson & Humphreys, 1997) or attentional allocation to new objects, presented with a luminance transient (Donk & Theeuwes, 2001). In the two experiments reported here, we tested whether prioritization by lum...
